Count me in for the Boston area.

Allan.

Yes, not only Boston but we need a support group here on Long Island =)

JoeMcCarthy, I live in NH, just a little ways accross the MA border. If you succeed in getting a group started in the Boston area I would really like to know about it. I really need some reinforcement with face to face dialogue.

NYU is just selling guns to both sides. Sarno may be a loss leader in terms of dollars for TMS treatment, but sooner or later you'll be back when you need to have your gall bladder removed.

If that's true about Sarno having closet fans, its profoundly sad. That means that these docs are referring patients to surgeons and PTs before referring to him. Should "to thine ownself be true" be part of the hippocratic oath? What I don't understand is how all his successes could be ignored - especially when PT and surgery often doesn't work.
Its a shame he doesn't have more quantitative proof of his successes. That's the only language the medical profession speaks.

To get on that list a doctor has to be voted there by his peers, not patients. According to the magazine the list includes the top 2% of doctors in the area. So, it's a start!!!

DianeP,

I remember a fairly recent quote by Dr. Sarno in which he said that he receives very few referrals from other doctors. That's really interesting in the light of the New York Magazine survey. I guess what we must have is a bunch of doctors who are closet Sarno fans. They secretly admire his work, so they vote for him in an anonymous survey, but they are afraid to refer patients to him. What a shame! What we need are more doctors willing to come out of the closet.

I wish I could get to one of those groups. I'm trying to get a group started with a doctor who studied wit Dr. Sarno in the Boston area. How is the Sarno group set up? What's the format?

Sandy,
The meetings are for Sarno pts and their families. Given you are a longtime success story, I'm sure you'd be welcome. He may even want you on the panel. Call his office and tell your story to Mary, his secretary. Not sure of the # off hand but its in the NYU directory. Nora

I would love to go to one of these meetings! I always joke that I am an evangelist for Dr. Sarno. I was cured in the 80's, after I went to see him, and remain fine to this day.

Can anybody go?

Where do I get in touch? Is there a mailing list? I do live in NYC.

If there is a cult, I am definetly a member!

I worked at the Rusk Institute (NYU) in the 80's and early 90's and he had already stopped referring patients to PT and OT. He gave an inservice to our dept. and most of us just thought it was kind of silly. I was very new in my profession (occupational therapy) so I just joined the bandwagon and assumed he was nuts. He was preaching treatment that was contrary to my field and as a young therapist, I was threatened so I turned the other way. Now, when I have patients that I think could've benefitted from his services years ago, I just feel sad. I don't feel threatened, I don't give a crap. (The difference between being in your 20's vs. your 40's!) I'm just so grateful for him. What a shame. Makes me so angry at the arrogance of the medical profession.

Nor & Jena,

Our own drziggles has these insights about how Dr. Sarno is viewed at NYU:

And yes, Sarno is a TOTAL pariah at NYU. He says that no one at the whole center refers patients to him, and that if he didn't already have tenure prior to his coming up with the TMS concept, he would not still be there...

It's against the rules to fire Sarno because he has tenure. The other NYU doctors don't seem to care about how many patients Sarno has helped. They hate his ideas and that's all that matters to them.

It would be great to see NYU embrace TMS treatment, but I think it will take a while...and it will take people with the courage to speak up despite the desire of the medical establishment to suppress Sarno's ideas.

Nor,

I was thinking the same thing and the funny this is they must realize how good Sarno is because even though he is like a condradiction to the rest of the staff they would never think about firing him or what not because he has healed to many... it is hilarious to think about. Maybe one day that entire part of the hospital will be TMS this and tms that ... 86 the surgeries and pain killer medications.
Nor Posted - 03/08/2006 : 19:39:25
Jena,
Stephen's story was classic back pain history. Herniated discs, lots of pain for 2 years, tried everything both traditional and alternative, nothing worked. Then he remembered seeing Sarno's book in B&N years earlier and sought it out. The rest is history. He didn't go too much into where his anger came from besides his father. Said he is an emotion bottler. I don't think he has any pain anymore. Maybe a little but nothing lasting or disfunctional.

What I think is hilarious is that there we were talking about how surgery is a billion dollar cult and there we were sitting in the temple of the cult. NYU Medical Center!! Wonder what the board over at NYU thinks of having Sarno on staff. They have a huge ortho and neurosurgery dept.

I believe the next meeting is April 18th... but once i get the email i will let you know. Yes Nor this was my first time at the meeting and it truly was great. They also said though that surgery is the billion dollar cult which is true and they also said in years to come this will be more open to people and doctors will start excepting it which i know will happen but its going to take time...

I loved the success stories and i think the people who were still experiencing pain just have to try and dig deeper but they ll get there. I missed stevens story i was late... can u maybe tell me a little more about it jsut a brief summary if possible... i know a lot of his anger came from his dad btu i didnt hear the beginning if he s completely healed like Georgia?
DianeP Posted - 03/08/2006 : 05:41:57
I wasn't able to get there last night. Sounds like I missed a really great experience. Anyway, did he indicate when the next 'alumni panel' is going to be held?
