Posted - 12/10/2008 : 14:58:21 I am 3 weeks into reading Sarno's Healing back pain. I have been feeling better, but not totally. I have had many decent nights sleep since I read his book. A few nights I kept waking up thinking I should be in pain, but I am not. But towards the end of my sleep some of the pain would come back. It is better then I can remember.
I have always had middle back pain between the shoulder blades, I have been exercising, the elliptical machine and running and about 2 days ago my sciatic nerve started hurting pretty bad.
I know there is nothing wrong with my back and maybe TMS has moved to that area. But even though I know there is nothing wrong with my back the pain has not gone away for 2 days now. If the pain just showed up to distract me, and I know that is the reason. Why does the pain not stop? I can't even think of anything new bugging me or making me angry
Thanks for any input Mark

Posted - 12/11/2008 : 13:23:36 16volt, have some patience, and try not to fall prey to the calendar which is something that Sarno and everyone else has warned against. The pain doesnt have to be due to any "new" stresses, it could very well be due to accumulated stresses or things that happened years ago. As Alexis said, these are deeply entrenched behaviors that dont necessarily dissapear overnight. |

Posted - 12/11/2008 : 12:57:10 Hi 16 volt,
I ve subscribed to the tms method for about 1 week now, and although apparently my spine is in atrocious shape it seems to be the only thing that has shown promise. I m at least 85% better, and I continue to feed off the success, I can honestly say im 150% in accordance with what TMS is all about, and I think thats what makes the difference.
It to early to tell whether or not it will last, but it seems as time goes on it effects become stronger and stronger - and I havent even read Dr. Sarnos book. I have however read countless hours from Rachels TMS rsi website which has provided me the basis.
Best of luck and hang in there - IT WILL HAPPEN and make sure you get the jest of what Sarno is talking about. Since I have a degree in health science and kinesiology, minor in Psych, it helps to make what he says all the more palatable. |

Posted - 12/11/2008 : 12:19:09 I think I will just have to work through this. I just ordered The Divided Mind. Hopefully that will give me some more insight.
I truly believe there is nothing wrong with my sciatic nerve, I actually continued to run yesterday with the pain. I can say the pain was no worse afterwards. The funny part is my sciatic never hurts its always been my middle back between the shoulder blades. Sarno said it would move around, I guess this is what he is talking about.

Posted - 12/11/2008 : 11:49:37 Hi John,
I'm thinking of the kind of thing Sarno describes on page 63 of MBP under Pavlovian Conditioning:
quote:
One of the most important clinical features of TMS is the tendency for sufferes to develop a specific pattern of pain, including what time of day or night they will begin to have pain...
But I think that pain itself can be a pattern. People become used to having pain, to having distractions. I don't know that you really need a really trigger anymore once it's become so deeply entrenched. It's like a learned fear that's no longer relevant -- simple conditioning keeps it going.
That said it's just a guess here. For all I know 16 has actually damaged his sciatic nerve. |

In my experience and from my reading I think there's more to TMS than just the distraction that's currently needed. There are patterns -- habits -- that are going to resurface because that's the way your brain has learned to function. |

You really simply haven't put in enough time and effort to see the results you are looking for. You need to reread the treatment and psychology sections of the book over and over again. You need to journal about the process of TMS and what could be contributing to your Child primitive's reactions of rage, sadness, and emotional pain. It takes a lot of conscious work for it to "sink in" unconsciously.
You may think you know it from reading it once...I thought I did. But believe me, you don't. Read and write about it everyday for a few months and then if you don't see improvement you could question why. |
