Hi Everyone,
I thought everyone here would be most interested in the very latest chronic pain study. I just posted it on my website:

Researchers at Northwestern University were able to predict - with 85% accuracy - which individuals would develop chronic pain. They did this by changes they found in specific emotional centers of the brain.
How about that? Who woulda' thought?????
This is an amazing study and may help to validate the process by which PPD and TMS pain occurs. Let me know what you think after you have read the details of the study.
Science may actually be forced to come around to what Dr. Sarno has been saying for the last 30+ years....

I could not agree with you more. It has also been my experience that once an individual has experienced pain relief from the TMS approach, everything changes . I know in 2001, it did for me. I had back pain that was TMS and "Mind Body Prescription" changed my life - personally and professionally. From that point on, nothing was the same for me ever again.
Just keep moving forward, folks. Don't give up and NEVER DOUBT HOW POWERFUL YOU ARE!!! All of us have to act as "disruptors" of the mainstream medical establishment's understanding of pain - and its treatment. We have to keep getting the word out.
If not us, then WHO??

PS: Yes, our daughter was born May 30th - thanks for asking, Steve. We now have three kids at home, all age 3 and under!! You would think my back would be out of control. But Love, Purpose and Meaning is the existential salve that keeps my pain of TMS far, far away. |

Dr. Z you're spot on. No wonder you've been honored 2 years running with the Compassionate Doctor Award. It shines through.
It's hard to see when we're deep in suffering how the experience is making us better people. We feel too disenfranchised at the time to look beyond the suffering. The obstacles we must rise above and the discovering of what sustains us contributes to our growth and makes us more compassionate caring people.
The pain itself means we are on the verge of transformation, yet we can't let go of something that binds us to the past. I read a post from a lady here yesterday who threw away her subscriptions to all her other medical modalities. I remember when I threw away all my therapeutic devices after finding Dr. Sarno, it was a freeing experience to let go of those things that no longer served me and that were holding me down. I saw the medical devices as enslaving me.
I've been reading your essays and I enjoyed the Monkey Trap. We can't move forward unless we let go of something else but we too often think our options are limited and that we have no power over our lives. Dr. Sarno enabled me to understand how much control I had over my life. And many people over the years have commented to me how Dr. Sopher's statement affected their lives when he said, "we are far stronger than we think." That statement freed and healed many people.
We get caught in the monkey trap grasping onto what we currently know.
I liked when you said that we, "carve out lives full of meaning and purpose DESPITE their suffering." I addressed that in my Chapter 25. Quoting Richard Rohr, "you can't help but think that that very boxing ring they live in is what's made them great."
Those people who open their minds to TMS and heal are worth the effort of trying to get to and they vastly outweigh the ones who won't listen, in time and effort. Dr. Sarno laid the foundation now it's time for us to build the house.
I would guess conservatively that about 80% of the people who email me who have healed tell me they want to spend their lives helping others understand TMS and heal. They are so excited about what had just happened to them they want to spread the happiness. I told Dr. Sarno he created an entire industry of new jobs.
So now we do our part and keep setting those brush fires you mention. You can't stop the truth in the end no matter how much resistance it meets. TMS is coming soon to a theater near you.
You remembered my Charlie Rose interview? I knew you would, it's just a matter of time and details. Did you have baby yet?

Wow. Thank you SO much for the very kind words about the website ("a vault for healing" - fantastic!). I am just so happy to know The Healthy Mind is helping people. That has been my mission from the beginning. I draw my inspiration from the collective strength of individuals who struggle with emotional and physical pain - yet carve out lives full of meaning and purpose DESPITE their suffering. Now that is strength.
And to be frank, SteveO, The Great Pain Deception is testament to that collective strength.
The more people all of us can reach, the better. We just need to keep pushing the message out there. If we can plant a seed or light a brushfire in the minds of people about PPD/TMS - and do it genuine way, with compassion and respect - people will listen. I really believe this to be true.
Some may not agree with the message at all. They may even be (as you and I have experienced) downright dismissive. Don't let that ever get to you. It is simply wasted energy to let it affect you. No worries. Keep pushing on. Because - just as reading Mind Body Prescription literally changed my life - this forum, the PPD/TMS Wiki, Steve's book and the incredible collective works of my colleagues in this field will continue to change someone else's life, for the better. And that, in my opinion, is worth the potential resistance we will encounter.
Keep pushing on.
And never doubt how truly powerful you are...

Dr. Z, your website is getting better and better. It's getting filled with great information, a vault for healing. It's filled with such great mindbody information that your colleagues probably won't talk to you soon.
I can't always get the player on your site to work. I think it's on my end but I can't listen to some of the podcasts for some reason.
