Hi everyone. This is my first post. I have suffered with back pain on and off for about 10 years (I'm 31). Diagnosed 3 years ago with a herniation. The first neurosurgeon I saw wanted to do a fusion surgery. The second one wanted only to remove the herniated material. I didn't allow either procedure. I went to acupuncture, massage, talk therapy, chiropractor, and I slowly got better. I had 3 mostly pain-free years. Six months ago, both of my hips started hurting when I would go for walks or at the end of a work day. In the past six months, it has progressed to severe sciatica in my left leg. I feel better on 800 mg ibuprofen every 6 hours and/or vicodin. The above therapies (minus the talk therapy) have not helped much this time. I read "Healing Back Pain" and it has resonated with me. I feel some better since reading the book and trying to apply the principles and I am not taking meds now, but I still have pain every day and some nights I have trouble sleeping because of it. I have an appointment to see a doctor who is able to diagnose TMS in mid-April. I can say that I have about 80% acceptance of the TMS diagnosis. I feel intuitively that I will be pain-free with 100% acceptance. Given that, I'm surprised that I still haven't reached 100%. I believe now that the credit I was giving to acupuncture for my previous recovery should more properly have been placed with the talk therapy and that I'm probably having a recurrance now based on conditioning.
I just wanted to share my story and see if anyone had any words of encouragement or suggestion to help me along this path. Thanks, everyone!

Somewhere on this website you'll find a reference to a study on spinal fusions. The main conclusion of the study is that they usually don't work. Mine sure didn't and the 6 month recovery period was agony....I haven't seen any similar study on the laminectomy/disectomy (non-fusion) type of surgical disc "repair". I've found roughly 85% improvement to my severe sciatica, which has been around for 20 years, by following Sarno's philosophy. And when I do have the pain, I'm no longer terrified by it because I know it is not structural.
