Hi All,

It's been a while since I posted. TMS is back or I think it is.

I workout quite a bit and to make the long story short I was diagnosed with Bicep Tendonitis.

It happened about two weeks ago and last week I finally went to see my doctor who prescribe mobic (antinflamatory) and therapy. I start this week, the worst of it all is I can't work out.

Does this sound like TMS? I am thinking that if 4 more weeks goes by and it doesn't heal it is TMS.

I so bummed out because I can't do any type of lifting..UGH!!1

Thank in advance, Litsa

Of course it could be TMS. Any current stress in your life?

I don't think you are wrong to listen to your body right now and even give your workouts a rest for a bit. Tendonitis heals in a matter of weeks or less. The time back to normal could be short. But if your pain becomes chronic, then taking a TMS approach would make sense. I KNOW that there are people who will disagree with me, but I don't think everything is TMS. When an illness becomes chronic, or when new symptoms pop up directly after chronic symptoms disappear, that's when I'd add the TMS label. And get out the journal.

I have TMS, but I also catch the colds and stomach bugs that go around my family. I think the best approach is to treat, rest--whatever applies--and get on with life. Don't overfocus on the symptoms, keep moving and the body will heal.

Hi winnieboo,

Thanks for your awesome ADVISE!!! Yes, as always I have stress...I am sure the Stress is contributing to the fact that it's now been 3 weeks and it hurts and i am going to therapy, however, I am going to stress.

If therapy helps fine then it's I'll take it that it is was truly an injury caused by too heavy lifting, but if it doesn't get better then I am going to go down the TMS route!

Thanks again!

Kalo: Dr. Sarno said when asked at a lecture: "if you can lift it, it isn't too heavy" which got a chuckle from most of us. So, I'd ask if you didn't do anything differently (lifting-wise), what was your thought pattern around the time this new pain appeared?

Resting occasionally from workouts is recommended anyway, isn't it?

Winnieboo: Ah, the power of the statement you made--and your brain heard it. "but I also catch the colds and stomach bugs that go around my family" I used to have that fear too, but I learned new things, have changed my thinking (new thinking becomes a belief) and I see that I do not "catch" things. I recently started to hug someone at work who quickly said "wait, I have a cold" and I said "I don't care" and hugged them anyway. I did not "catch" anything from them. But that is because it's my belief. It's liberating!

I'm seeing more and more articles in the past months that state that up to 90ish % of ailments for which people make doc appointments are stress-related. What does that mean? MOST issues for which people seek medical help are emotionally-rooted issues. I can't be the only person on this Board reading these articles!! C'mon!

Hi Lori,
In response to your comment: Maybe I'm a TMS heretic, but I'm of the opinion that not everything is psychosomatic. I do agree with your point that stress and attitude can positively or negatively affect a person's immune system.

Hi mizlorinj, and thanks for your response. I actually maxed out and lifted heavier then usual. My arms are pretty cut as they say in the weight room, however, I only weigh 106 pounds. I was getting very strong...I sometimes have hard time believing that our bodies can take on workout punshiments and not feel anything...I know Dr. Sarno has said that our bodies aren't made out of paper machey (can't spell), but I think that you can't just abuse it either...

The problem now is I still have the tendonitis and it has been 3 1/2 weeks with no workout, but I have been doing work around the house and the tendonitis is still swollen and hurts.

The worst part is I did opt for the therapy, but I am giving myself a time line that if in a couple weeks With REST/Therapy and no improvement I will STOP and start thinking it is TMS....

Thanks for your reply, Kalo!

In away I agree with you winnieboo...I don't believe everything is psychosomatic either. Being that I lifted HEAVIER then ever and didn't even warm up...I don't think this time it is pschosomatic. If I would of just woken up with tendonitis in my bicep without doing anything then I would probably think this could be TMS...

But, like I said the body heals and if this takes a long time to heal then I am going to eventually assume it's TMS...

However, can I say that stress does make the pain worst...

Thanks for your response!!! Kalo

Thanks Kalo,
I actually wrote a longer response yesterday, but deleted it shortly after posting, because I was rather heated. Sarno showed me that my neck and shoulder pain was TMS and I'm 95% recovered. Separately, I've struggled with allergies, sinusitis and migraines forever, and recently I tried to Sarnoize those symptoms. I went on and off antibiotics and then recently decided to journal and ignore the pain. I wound up with a nasty bacterial infection and now need very strong antibiotics. When the doctor examined me he said, "why did you wait so long?"

So, I think it can be confusing when you have TMS. I have discussed this at length with my TMS therapist as well. Having TMS doesn't necessarily mean that a journal and a better mind-body connection can cure every ailment, at least that's not my understanding of it. I'm not discounting that stress is underneath many illnesses, including my sinus infections. I hope I can reduce my stress through this process and "shift" my mind to be less susceptible to illness.

I know Louise Hays cured her own cancer and has a great emotional correlative for every ailment in every part of the body. I think there's truth to that. But I also believe that people, even TMSers, get sick and need treatment, and we have to use some intelligence about it.
