Thanks to Tunza's most interesting post conditioning/unconscious control of blood flow it opened my eyes to the possiblity that my adult asthma triggered by cool/cold air could very likely be a conditioned TMS equivalent. Then Louise posted her response that sent me on the path to unconditioning myself to this condition that rules my life every N.Y. winter. I am seeing some progress but I am not there yet. If anyone else has eliminated asthma I would really love to hear about it. The more success stories the better!

Hi Holly, I developed a moderately severe breathing problem during one of my tms syndrome episodes. It went in varing degrees from irritating to not being able to walk to the barn. The more frightened I became, the worse it would become even sometimes ending up in hyperventilation. I'm sure now it was just a panic attack. I had never had any type of breathing problems before. When I found Sarno, the problem left, never to return. I have several friends with similar symptoms. One has hospitalized himself twice in the last two months thinking his lung collapsed on a plane. They can find nothing wrong with him. Two weeks ago his back went out. I finally got up the nerve to tell them both about Sarno.(I have not had much success with anyone listening to my tms diagnosis.) Both were receptive and have ordered the book. I am hopeful for them. I am convinced that most asthma, aside from allergic reaction, is tms.

Hi Holly and Susie.

Susie, what do you mean by "aside from allergic reaction"....I don't know a lot about asthma, and didn't know or haven't ever heard about it being triggered by allergies.
My good friends son has it horribly....they spend many nights going to the emergency room and he has to take time off of work, etc. to deal with his sons acute attacks.
My friend is one of those who recovered reading HBP,but has since "relapsed" into conventional medicine for his newly aquired TMJ.His wife dominates and rules his life, his house is a construction site at all times(constant and continuous remodeling),and their household is the ultima thule TMS factory...a loving OVER concerned family, strapped down with overspending,over-commitment/activities,and non-stop medical problems.
His son just came back from having Brain surgery for a rare problem called moya-moya(splng?) and is scheduled for open heart surgery as soon as he has fully recovered. These aren't psychosomatic...he had numerous birth defects, having been born at only 7 months.....he's basically been in the medical system continuously since birth, and he's now 6 years old.
However, after reading the posts about asthma,I was wondering if perhaps that one symptom MIGHT be a TMS manifestation,as from the perspective of an outsider looking in,their household/family is in constant chaos.
I would never be so cruel as to suggest anything like this to him,but as our families have deep ties,I have had a lot of exposure to their family mentality.....and it's "there is always a reason for addressing health issues"...maybe the asthma is something that hits the little guy in the interludes of respite from real issues?????
What do you think?

I am way to close to them to even suggest something, but I do care about him/them,and the day might come when it might be appropriate to discuss it with him.....he was open-minded to it once,he might once again.

When I refered to asthma being caused by tms other than allergic reactions, I was refering to breathing problems being caused by things such as cats, food, medications, etc. Perhaps breathing problems caused by allergies should not be referenced in the same context as asthma. I have several friends that have had asthma for years and their episodes arise during times of stress. Don't alot of children outgrow their asthma symptoms when they reach adulthood? I am very allergic to cats and if I am in a house with them in about an hour my throat feels like it is closing up and I have alot of trouble breathing. If I get out in some fresh air, I am fine in about an hour. Maybe my brain learned this procedure from my allergy and decided to use it as one of it's many destractive techniques. I just have a feeling that asthma is like so many pain syndromes we experience and its treatment is probably just as misguided. I have become very mistrustful of medicine since my tms awakening. I guess one must be careful not to go to extremes.

Hi Susie.
I think Sarno himself has that cat deal....that's what I was wondering about when you said 'triggered by allergies'

I asked my friend last night when we were chatting when the last time his son had an acute attack of asthma(necessitating a Hospital visit)...He said it was the day before he left for Brain surgery up at Stanford.
As I called him last night, his son started having an attack while we were on the phone....it was his Birthday and his father had just told hm he had to go to bed...
Someone here on the forum posted information on a study on when asthma attacks happen...whoever posted it,could you post it again?

Interesting note on allergies....I understood the mind causing a physical symptom very well when I read the book the first time...I break out in sweats and mild swelling whenever I am exposed to anything with citric, lactic acid or vinegar....not enough to keep me from eating all these things, just enough to be embarassing and NOT eat these foods in public (Oranges, caesar salad, ketchup, margarita mix,etc)....
I can break into an episode simply by viewing any of these foods under glass, wrapped in plastic, etc. I actually just felt it mildly when I merely typed the words!
I wondered one day why I still have this effect,as all my other psychosomatic symptoms have disappeared...I know WHY I get this reaction, and I know it's psychological(looking at an AD for mustard?)
Than it hit me.....I don't want or care enough for the symptom to go away...It's never been so intrusive as to stop a days activities,it's just a mild nuisance....
this explains once again why some people won't respond to TMS theory until their symptoms are completely debilitating.....

peace
