Hi All,

I know I don't contribute much to TMSHELP forum, but I thought I would share you with something.

I have a good Doctor who is thorough and well now it's been three weeks since my thumb starting acting up.

So, I made another appointment to see my doctor. During my visit the nurse started taking my vitals and asked me what my visit was all about and I explained to her about seeing the doc. yet again for this nagging mcp joint pain.

She then looks at my thumb and says "well there is no visible signs of swelling" and your X-ray report came back clean and everything looks okay.

Finally the doctor comes in and we discuss the pain I am having and the fact that it's not going away. He has run out of ideas. I ask him do you think that STRESS can exerbate the pain and he say's "No"

He suggest that I make an appointment with a hand specialist and now I have a Wednesday appointment with the specialist.

I can't help but think this is what Dr. Sarno talks about in his book where he saids millions of dollars are spent every year because Doctors don't believe that the mind produces pain.

Heck, as a matter of fact I feel ashamed that my hypochondria has gotten me to this point.
I don't want to label myself hypochondria because it's not like I worry myself about diseases like MS or ALS.

I am just scared that this pain will not let me EVER play guitar and that is my lively hood.

Sorry to complain and not come with a more positive contribution, but it seems to me that the doctors today just try to treat the sympton and not really ask if there is any stress going on in a persons life.

Thanks for reading, Kalo

Doctors can only treat patients according to their training. It is a rare physician who acknowledges the mindbody connection.

What is important is that you believe it and stay the course. If you have ruled out any serious disease or structural issue then you should be able to confidently treat the symptom as TMS and follow Dr. Sarno's treatment suggestions.

I understand the serious disease, but what do you mean by strutural issue? I thought Dr. Sarno said structural abonormality isn't neccessary the cause of pain?

Well as stated my X-ray looks good, however, I am just scared that I'll have to do an MRI.

Thanks Kalo

Hi Pan,

Well apart of me wonders if going to the hand specialist is opening "a can of worms" I guess it's the worrier in me that gets in into trouble.

What do you all think?? Say I went to Dr. Sarno and explained to him that my X-ray was clean but I am still experiencing MCP joint pain with NO swelling.

My heart tells me he would say "THINK EMOTIONAL" there is nothing wrong with you and that Dr. Sarno is right! Mind is really diverting my attention that is for sure.

Thanks for your reply! Kalo

Hi Kalo,

Some years back my thumb sort of gave out. It hurt every time I picked up a pencil or scissors. I couldn’t even turn pages in a book without sever pain. (All before I even knew about TMS)
I went to a hand specialist and after a series of x-rays I was told that I would need a joint replacement in my thumb. This is really major surgery. It involves having a brace and pins to hold the joint in place until it heals.
Being a coward along with not being able to take off 6 months from work I choose not to have the surgery. The doctors said that would be the only way the pain would go away.
Well they were wrong. After a few months the pain just went away.
Yes, it did pop up in my back about a year later, but as I said this all happened before I knew about Dr. Sarno and TMS.
Believe that this is TMS. You will be fine.
Marsha

Kalo, I have had thumb pain when i bent it back as a kid, and it went away (took years though). I had wrist pain when i worked out, and i was I did xrays and they said that there was widening of the wrist canal, that pain went away. What I am getting at is that the pain goes away and your body heals itself, and for me the pain went away when I stopped thinking about it.

Now, the back I can find such as easy answer on that!

a long time ago i was having a lot of thumb pain in both thumbs and I didn't know what to do about it(before I knew about tms), one night I came home real late and started watching tv and watched a joint replacement surgery on the health channel, all of the persons bones from his hand were spread across the table and they put little silicone "joints" in to the bones and put the hands back together. after seeing that i swore I'd find a better way than going through all that.
now I know it was tms, no doubt in my mind.

stay away from doctors unless absolutely necessary.
my 2 cents.

Thank you to all!! Your comments are making me think twice about seeing the hand specialist. I know about joint replacement and it does sound scarey!!

Yet, the one thing I have on myside is that my X-ray showed NOTHING!!!

I guess my doctor didn't know what to think so he ponded me or should I say passed me on to someone else.

I wish doctors would take the time as I admit that I was a worrier and that I stress going on.

He didn't think that causes pain. Him, I wish there were more TMS doctors out there!

I really appreciate the responses and it is encouraging to see that a lot of you got rid of your pain believing it was TMS!! Reading your post has really inspired me.

Thank you, Kalo

Regarding docs and your thumb, it reminds me of the saying that when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail.
