You know I hardly ever get sick. Hardly ever. I don't know if it is just coincidence, murphy's law or just plain bad luck but right before a big party or event that I have been looking foward to I start feeling my throat beginning to feel saw. I feel like I am about to come down with something. I start getting real pissed off too. It's always after I spent alot of time getting an outfit together for the event etc. This is the 3rd. time this has happened to me. Last year my good friend who is known for throwing very elabrite parties put on a Bat Mitzvah. She must of spent $80,000 on this affair. I was the only one that didn't make it because I got the flu. I don't think I ever got the flu before in my life but came down with it just before the big party. I was so upset I missed it and that was all everyone talked about for weeks after as to how incrediable it was!
That was last year. 2 weeks ago just before another Bar Mitzvah (nowhere as big but still a nice affair)my glands started to feel swollen. I am like "great! Here we go again" (more rage). Well I babied myself that day and made it to the party and it never did turn into anything to my surprise. Well the same friend that threw that $80,000 affair I first told you about is having a New Years party in her home right down the block tonight! I made her a big gift basket, made arrangements for my kids and walla my throat is saw and I feel like I am comming down with something again (and the rage is starting). My kids are both well too!( Usually it is one of my kids get's sick just as we are about to catch a plane to go on a long awaited on vacation) Well I am taking it easy today and I am going to go tonight but I sure wish I was feeling normal like every other day of my life when I don't have something special to go to!
Excuse me while I go make another tea with honey! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Holly,

I think your flu could be TMS related. The symptoms are real, the swollen glands, etc. I have noticed a pattern in my cold/flus (I have never known the difference - I think it's all the same thing).
I won't go into the details of the events that trigger my illnesses but I have seen definite pattern emereging with a TMS connection between the event and the illness.

It's becomeing commonly accepted in new-age medicine that the immune system can be effected by emotions. I have witnessed it in my recent cold/flus. The symptoms were very real. On my back for a week, congestion, weakness, feverish, etc. In my case it's triggered by an event I don't want to attend. In your case it's something you want to attend. That is consistent with TMS. Events both seemingly negative as well as POSITIVE can cause TMS psychgenic symptoms. Any thing that threatens to take us out of our comfort zone or homeostasis can trigger TMS.

Once you see the pattern it becomes rather amusing how obvious it is. I just recently spent a week in bed with a TMS cold/flu. It followed a very busy period and preceeded a group trip I didn't want to go on. It was the perfect time for me to spend a week in bed relaxing, reading, watching CNBC business news and letting my body rest from the double practice sessions on the courts I had been doing. I wasn't missed at work so it was the perfect time to be "sick". I am sure it was a self-induced, TMS, auto-immune, event.

Just like we don't know the cause or cure for arthritis, we don't know the cause or cure for the common cold. I feel it's all the same thing, TMS induced. Indiviually or group dynamics. Maybe it's not germs that spread colds, instead lemming like behavior.

So if I were you, I'd try going to the party, and see what happens. You can always leave early. You don't have to know the underlying psychology of why the TMS event is occuring. You only have to understand that it's probably a TMS equivalent and the gremlin is playing tricks.

Happy New Year! Party On!

Holly,
The sore throat thing has happened to me numerous times right before I have to go to some event. I think unconsciously I either fear that I'm going to get a sore throat that will prevent me from going or I'm just anxious about wanting everything to go well (i.e. for me to "perform" well at the event and meet the expectations of looking good, acting "nice", impressing people or whatever). I've stopped many a sore throat by telling myself it's just TMS and for my body to "knock it off".
Don't let it intimidate you, take control and talk back!

I believe our immune system is a huge target of TMS.

I have a friend who gets sick around Christmas every year, like clockwork. When the time comes she doesn't hesitate to tell everyone that she always gets sick and is trying to avoid it this year by taking lots of Vitamin C. She gets sick anyway.

The mind is a powerful thing.

I get regular lower back pain. Occasionally I get knee pain, neck pain, upper back pain, thigh pain, irritable bowell syndrome, gas, tinitus, numb arms, small tension headaches, toe pain, dry mouth, and hives.

But I hardly ever get sick. Perhaps my TMS is too busy with everything else to get involved with my immune system.

I am one of those people who gets sick at holiday time every year. It's almost laughable. This year, however, I got away with being sick for the holidays because I came down with fever, sore throat, etc. much earlier in November. Why you might wonder??? You see, I was called for jury duty the end of November and was DREADING going there. The morning I had to go - I woke up with fever, sore throat, etc. Coincidence?? I don't think so. At least this is the first time in many years I wasn't sick for Christmas or New Year's Eve!!!I must remember this next year and figure out a way to activate it early again. Gina

Holly:

It happened three times in the past year, before I ever heard of TMS. Before this past year it never happened. Each time it happened while at work. I'd get up from my chair and take a step, and for some reason the entire toe area of one of my feet would feel very stiff and sore each time I took a step. As if I had arthritis or something. It would happen for no apparent reason, and last for a couple of hours. I haven't had it happen for a couple of months. I think I've been too busy with other TMS type symptons. Is it a TMS sympton? I don't know. If there was actually something wrong, I would think that there would have been an event that started it, and it would be a regular problem. As best as I can remember, other parts of my body weren't bothering me when it happened.

This reminds me of something else. At times one of my knees will bother me. It makes it really painful to squat or walk on steps. When it happens I'll say to myself that it's a good thing that my back isn't bugging me now, because I'm now able to bend over to pick things up. Conversly, when my back bugs me and I can't bend, I tell myself that it's a good thing that one of my knees aren't bothering me, so I can squat when I have to pick something up. Also, both knees don't tend to bother me at the same time. It is interesting that my pain manifests in only certain areas at any given time. If I had real problem, they should manifest all of the time. I had xrays of my knees taken, and nothing is structurally wrong.

During my last episode, my back hurt even when I squated. This really scarred me, but then I found one of Dr. Sarno's book. I still have problems, but I'm better than I was. I still have doubts about what Sarno's books say. I'm really working on it though. Actually, I'm pretty compulsive about it.

I used to get sick like CLOCKWORK every holiday season ,and like Daves friend with the Vitamin C,I have seen the pattern....
I do the same thing...plenty of placebo-min C,BUT..I also spent a looooong time talking to my brain about us(me and my subconscious) NOT getting sick this year and actually feeling emotions...
