hi all,
i recently started swimming again and gee whiz, on the second time, hurt my shoulder. (site of a previous injury that had required cortisone). ok my shoulders do roll forward a bit. my partner says i should probably take a swimming lesson before going back in the water.
how does one ever know if it's TMS or just plain bad form? i am sure i could have better form. but i do suspect TMS too. could it be both? since i got confused... oh oh! i stopped swimming. darn! maybe i should just take the lesson... but if it still hurts after that, what will i have learned? both shoulders have been a bit achy since the swim.
thanks...

glowgirl...How far did you swim? Or better yet, how much time did you spend in the water swimming?

hi art,
the first time i did like, 15 or so laps effortlessly (it's been, like 15 years, but i was inspired to go out and have fun and use my body and all so i did, and it was just fantastic!) and the second time, it started to hurt pretty soon after i got started so after about 5 or so laps i thought, this shouldn't be hurting, so i stopped.
thanks for asking...

Very unlikely you've hurt yourself with that amount of swimming. Of course, not impossible. 1 more question? Were you worried about the shoulder before swimming?

no worries before the swim started. oh but NOW i'm worried!
anyway i did sign up for a lesson.
i figured, people take lessons all the time, golf, tennis, etc.
one lesson and my form will be checked.

thanks for asking.

The reason I asked is when you're worried about a certain injury recurring we often make it happen.

I swim by the way. Very badly. Terrible form. All dog paddle-y and flailing about, trying not
to drown. No injuries in over two years, except for strained abs which I pretty much ignored. This is not to say lessons aren't a good idea of course. God knows I sure could use them, but I fear I'm hopeless. Just my way of pointing out that a combined total of.. what?....30-40 minutes of swimming is not likely to injure you, no matter how bad your form is :-)

Hi Art,
well, i took the plunge (ha ha)
and had a swimming lesson and it was GREAT! he said i was at 60-70% (ie not bad, pretty good, sorta, until i tried to use my slightly bum shoulder... uh oh...! not bad, i haven't been swimming in 15 years thanks to TMS fears, not of swimming, but other things.
anyway... i'm turning over all kinds of new leaves here. i want my life to be different, so very different, and free of my TMS.

well so yes then after a while the pain appeared during the lesson.
so...
i get it, sigh: TMS! if not frozen shoulder then blah blah blah some-stupid-name shoulder pain from way back when (i used to be a Wall Street commodities trader long ago the first time my shoulder was injured so maybe that's the first time i had stress and anger around this area, ya think????)

it sucks but god i had so much fun with my lesson, and i want to have another lesson so much i can taste it!
and push into the pain and keep going, i see how the the pain wanted to keep me from my lesson and from swimming (oh and by the way 1000 other things)
please, i tell my body, let's do this! kick out that TMS program!
it's hard because short term it looks like i am making it worse by taking up swimming but gosh darn it, I need to have fun! and get back into life and sports and i want, want, want to swim SO MUCH!
i have an appt with a TMS therapist tomorrow (thank you SteveO for the suggestion of whom to see)
just in time!

art, does your arm hurt when you swim? did it ever?
also is okay (in TMS world) to use ice?

i am so new to all of this..

ps i think lessons are different from therapy...

thanks,
gg
