The most recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) replaces hypochondriasis (hypochondria) with two new disorders: Somatic Symptom Disorder and Illness Anxiety Disorder. Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) is characterized by a patient having one or more chronic somatic symptoms about which they are excessively concerned, preoccupied or fearful. Illness Anxiety Disorder (IAD) pertains to those who have heightened bodily sensations, are intensely anxious about the possibility of an undiagnosed illness, or devote excessive time and energy to health concerns. IAD may or may not be accompanied by a (real) diagnosed illness. Does this sound familiar? TMS would seem to imply SSD and most participants in this forum qualify for IAD.
It is interesting that a hypochondriac is no longer required to believe he has an imaginary disease. This allows us to be hypochondriacs even if we get a positive diagnosis from a fee hungry physician.
