To Everyone:

I was thinking it might be nice to start a thread to see how applying Sarno's theories has helped. I just checked the members list and in the past 10 days, there's been about 65 people who have posted some type of message. That's a pretty good level of activity.

For those taking the time to read this who have given Sarno's treatment process some effort, simply reply with A, B, C, D E or F:

TMS Treatment has:

A: Completely eliminated the pain 100%

B: The Pain is mostly gone but I still have minor twinges that are of little concern to me. I'm no longer afraid.

C: I still have frequent severe pain but it's much improved and my quality of life is better.

D: I've seen no improvement, but it hasn't gotten worse either by using Sarno's theories

E: I feel worse for even trying this process.

F: I haven't seen results because I just found out about Sarno or just started the process.

Let's just see what comes back on this survey without adding our own comments or theories on why you are where you are.

Dave, feel free to veto this thread if you have reason. But I am really curious as to the results. I'll summarize it all for you guys once we get enough feedback.

Thanks!

Dan

PS: My answer is B.

Amy: Keep the process going. You are definitely on the right track. Persistence and consistency is what seems to work for me. Not fretting a bad day along the way. Just continuing the process knowing all along that you are doing what it takes to get results.

Congrats on your improvement so far.

Amy, it sounds like you are doing great.

Also don't rule out TMS as a component of the knee pain. It is certainly possible there is a structural issue there, such as if you had an injury, but TMS often attacks those spots to make the pain worse or more chronic.

It sounds like you have a good frame of mind. You are taking it day by day and do not have unrealistic expectations. You seem to have a long-term view, which is great.

I have been reading for about a week and posting for three days. I definitely see a lot of value in sarno's philosophy but am still trying to fine tune things so that they make sense for me. My carpal tunnel is definitely improved. I havent slept with he wrist splint for three days and have minimal morning numbness. I still have plantar fascitis pain but I have not slept with a night splint for three days and the pain levels DID NOT go through the roof like they had. Low back pain is still present but less. Neck and shoulder pain in unchanged but then again we are dealing with 10-15 years of pain patterns there. Knee issues are unchanged but then again I really doubt that they are TMS. I am completely bone on bone in two of three compartments, my knee actually locks, pops, subluxes and dislocates. That may indeed be physical. Even if my neck, back, feet wrists, intermittent light headed feeling, racing thoughts and occasional clenching of teeth improve, I would be thrilled even if the knees do turn out to be physical and don't respond until I bite the bullet and have a TKR. I am encouraged by the small steps that I have made quickly. When my neck, feet etc start in during the day, I do tell myself that there is nothing wrong with me physically. I tell my brain to back off and stop playing games with my mind. I know how silly it sounds, but after thinking that and taking a deep calming breath, the shoulders and jaw clenching don't disappear but do lessen a lot. Hopefully, I am on the right path. I get the feeling that this really is a journey or path.

Right now i am strong B or B+,but thru the process of healing i have seen all of these in order: F,E,C, now B and i know over time it will be pure A.
cfhunter Posted - 08/18/2007 : 19:40:23
A-for neuroma pain and numbness-gone completely and I ran right through the issue-yay for me.
B-working on the teeth one now

Recommended it to a friend headed for surgery on her back...she listened to the audio "Healing Back Pain" and was 30% better the next day!

An update on the Results:

Some people reported multiple times based on different ailments. For example, A for back pain, C for headaches, etc. Whether it be statistically correct, let's not debate. I chose to consider these two results instead of just one.

The other thing I didn't expect is that some people threw in plus and minus grades like A- or B+. For ease of the results, I'm going to group any A plus or minus in with the A's.

Here they are:

TMS Treatment has:

A: Completely eliminated the pain 100% - 14 of 30 (46.6%)

B: The Pain is mostly gone but I still have minor twinges that are of little concern to me. I'm no longer afraid. - 9 of 30 (30%)

C: I still have frequent severe pain but it's much improved and my quality of life is better. - 5 of 30 (16.6%)

D: I've seen no improvement, but it hasn't gotten worse either by using Sarno's theories - 1 of 30 (3.3%)

E: I feel worse for even trying this process. - 1 of 30 (3.3%)

F: I haven't seen results because I just found out about Sarno or just started the process. - 0 of 30

So, to wrap it up, 93.3% of the responses were that they were improved by applying the Sarno process to their pain. Only 6.6% said no improvement or things got worse. Heck, nearly half said they are completely pain free. Nice!

Feel free to add your response if you haven't yet. I can recalculate at a later time if people still keep adding their results.

Dan

A, baby for pain. 100% free!

Although for little stuff like acne and dandruff, C.

Hi Dan, no worries. And I do think the post is a good idea...congregating results in one place is very encouraging. Success stories were one of the most helpful things in my recovery.

I'm a B. I (so far) have been lucky in that reading the description of Dr. Sarno's book on Amazon was enough to get me "over the hump" and stop obsessing over (and fearing) every little twinge. I've read two of his books now and think he is really onto something regarding how the mind works. I sometimes have issues with some things Sarno says but that may be because I have had results pretty quickly. I'm sure there are different types/degrees of TMS.

After spending the last year with piriformis and shoulder issues that constantly altered my exercise schedule, I entered a masters swim meet this summer partly to test how my body would respond to training and racing. Very happy to say I was able to do both injury free.

C+ I guess would be best description for me.

I do most of what I used to, but have problems in the morning. Very tender I thinks is best way to describe it. But after a few hours of work, I loosen up. And slowly am working up to lifting heavy again and playing sports. Seem to get sore and tender when laying in same position for hours.

Just a note. I'm no Sarno purist. I've been physically working out and have gained most positive results from this. But when the pains come, I scream at them to get out of my life and this has really worked well too. Pushing myself has helped mostly and just saying screw the pain.

Alexis: My apology if you took my reference of Sarno bashing as a personal insult. It was never intended that way. But franky I was just getting frustrated with the endless debate about who's right and who's wrong about Sarno this and Sarno that. This entire thread was simply an effort to talk about RESULTS.

My hope was that seeing LOTS of positive results (which we have seen) - it would be encouraging to the others in the forum. It wasn't to further segregate the "I believe" versus the "I have some doubts" people.

Again, my apologies...

This is coming from a doctor who still gives traditional treatment modalities for people who clearly have TMS. Now how medically ethical is that?

Sarno-ize it!
Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." It's all you need to know in order to recover.

I'm an A-, cured, I believe, by reading Sarno -- and for the record, one of the people the author of this thread would refer to as a "Sarno basher". I cured myself using Sarno's principles, and suspect a large of what he says has validity. But I (gasp!) dare to question whether every aspect of the theory is accurate.

I think, as I've said before, that purists and mixed-theorists are probably phychologically quite different at a fundamental level. I have no problem with the existence of purists, but I really with they could keep their simplistic accusations of "Sarno bashing" etc. to themselves. Co-existence is a two way street...if you aren't able to deal with people raising doubt, stop reading when you get to the post. If you aren't capable of stopping yourself from reading, you probably need deeper psychological help than you're going to get here. That's compulsive behaviour, and there are many treatments, both Sarno and non-Sarno.

This kind of random insult makes an otherwise interesting thread just annoying. And you ask why so few have answered?

A for intermittent 30 yr backache
B- for insomnia (which is reason I read Sarno) but getting there.

I'm a B/C, very satisfied so far. I'm convinced its a process for most of us. It may go on forever but we have more control after Sarno.

Gang:

Let's try to keep this thread strictly for giving your results and not debating the TMS topic.

For those who haven't submitted their results yet, please do.

Thanks!

Dan
