Posted - 05/20/2013 : 06:45:35 Hey group...
I’m a long time forum member. 62 years old. Retired businessman.. Also a freelance writer on an occasional basis. I tried to quit the forum which didn’t take as I find the struggles and experiences of those battling psychosomatic pain interesting and helpful to my own case. PLus I think I have something to offer. And yet the forum can be frustrating with it’s many competing voices. Most are helpful, but it can be confusing and hard to be heard.
I still have TMS symptoms, but I’ve the hard won tools to deal with them now. I don’t look at recurrences of pain as a relapse, but for many of us an ongoing expression of what’s really a chronic illness. The good news is it’s possible...and even relatively easy after a while...to manage this illness. This isn’t to say that it has to be chronic. Many find the tools and are never bothered again.
My own understanding of TMS is different from Sarno’s in some respects but in line with the dawning sense among professionals that psychosomatic pain is a stress disorder. For many of us, controlling this consciously felt stress is the way to healing. Opinions can and do vary. My own understanding derives from my own experience coupled with years of reading about the struggles...and success stories....of forum members.
I’m a smart, empathetic guy with much to offer to anyone who’s struggling. If I don’t think I can help I’ll tell you so. Of course it should go without saying that I’m not looking for remuneration, but this is the Internet so maybe I should say. Also, I’m not a professional. I went to graduate school decades ago with the goal of becoming a therapist but life had other ideas for me....
If anyone’s interested my email address is plogthesmith@gmail.com. Not a very interesting story as to the email name. But for what it’s worth, Plog the smith is a character from a Bergman movie I’ve always thought a lot of. |

Even professionals lose people, all the time. Keep up the good work. Look forward to hearing some success stories, which no doubt will come. |

Hi Mala,
Dr. Sarno has always said that TMS moves around constantly and this is one of the main ways that you know it is TMS. New symptoms are equivalents. Symptoms can also occur in tandem. A Symptom Imperative (or substitution) is when one symptom stops and a new one starts.
I'm a Dr. Sarno purist and have read only 2 other books on TMS that were written by SteveO and Nicole Sachs because they are also Dr. Sarno purists. I haven't wanted to overwhelm and confuse myself by continuing to search for answers elsewhere. I have found my answers already.

Macca and Mala,
I love it when symptoms jump around. So I couldn’t agree more Macca on that score. It’s a dead give-away and should give anyone fighting doubts...and we all do at times...much reassurance... |

Posted - 05/22/2013 : 12:45:32 Hey gang
You’re all so generous. It’s good to belong to a community of like-minded people. So glad I reconsidered my plan to move on...
But the truth is, it’s really not that big a deal. I’m retired now, and wanting to keep busy, and so I have the time. And Bryan, if the people I’m working with were to chronicle the work so far, I’d be looking pretty mediocre. I’ve lost one which was entirely my fault. , and I get the feeling another isn’t too happy.
Of course, all I can do is the best I can do, and I’m happy to do that and then some. I’m just feeling my way along like everyone else here. Along the way, if I can help a few people...even by accident...I’ll be very happy about that. |

Again, many thanks for doing this. I wonder if there is a way the people you are helping could chronicle the work and progress here so others could benefit? (In whatever way you see logical.)
Props again for taking this on. You're a good man. Look forward to hearing about it. |

Mala, this is not correct information, "SYMPTOM SUBSTITUTION" is mentioned in all of Dr. Sarno's books as well as by all prominent TMS experts and authors.

Posted - 05/20/2013 : 22:01:57 What u r doing is great Art.
As frustrating as the forum may be I think that there r many people who would benefit from what u have to say (& have said in the past)
The basic concept of TMS is sound but there are many ways of healing, not just the 'one' & that's why some things work for some & not for others. For example I don't think hardcore journalling works for everyone & in some cases can be detrimental. There r other things too. Reading Sarno will lead you to believe that it is rare for another symptom to show up whereas so many people talk about symptoms moving around.
The treatment I think depends on many factors the biggest being what your personality type is . The smorgasbord of ideas that are presented on this forum confusing as some of them may be allows for people to choose what may work for them based on perhaps what work for someone else.
It is important for ideas to evolve, for people to share their experiences about their healing.
I hope that while u are helping those lucky 7 that you will keep sharing with us here too.

Posted - 05/20/2013 : 15:09:33 Hey Guys, I was worried I wouldn’t get much of a response, but I’ve already heard from seven. Very gratifying, but have to cap it there due to time constraints. Can’t tell you how much I appreciate the interest. If you’ve responded, I’ll be in touch shortly..
Best to all, Art |

Anyway, just enlightened self interest. Ultimately it’s a way to help myself. Hope I get a few takers.
