I don't know if anyone noticed I've been gone. My hard drive crashed a week ago, right when I was ready to do some more posting. It'll be a little while before my computer gets back to normal.
We've been seeing an increasing number of hard drive crashes at work, so I thought it would be good to post a warning. I've heard that drive realiability (and warranties) have been going down for all manufacturers. Apparently, they're making things so small that they don't know how to keep the drives realiable anymore.
Notebook computers seem to have more problems, since their drives are smaller. Still, drives in desktop and tower computers can be problematic. Mine drive was in a tower, and it was old enough that I thought it wouldn't have reliability problems. It was a 60 GB drive made in 2001.
I do have a backup, but it's about a year old. I guess I better do a lot better job of backing things up now.

Thanks for that, Jim. My nest door neighbour has had similar problems and her computer is only a few months old!
I'm a Mac fan - touch wood - no problems in the years I've had them and, of course, no nasty viruses to worry about. Maybe it's worth thinking about changing to a Mac next time you get a new system. |

You're welcome, Anne. So you're a Mac fan? Part of the rebellion against the Evil Empire? I remember when I was on one of you. Somehow, Lord Gates lured me over to the Dark Side.
You're right that Macs have less problems with viruses and spyware. I think that this is mainly because Windows computers are much more popular, and hackers tend to target the more popular platforms.
As far as hard drive crashes are concerned, I doubt that you're any better off with a Mac. Apple has to buy its hard drives from the same manufacturers as other computer makers. It's very likely that the problems are inherent to the drive mechanism itself, so I don't see what Apple could due to avoid drive crashes. Sorry.
Make backups early and often.
