I am new to the whole idea of the mindbody connection for pain. After reading Dr. Sarno's book, I am positive I have TMS. I have been suffering from "fibromyalgia" and severe headache pain for years. I'm just not clear about how, without seeing Dr. Sarno or a recommended psychologist, that I can successfully help myself. His books don't really make the treatment clear enough. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi judyhorowitz
What is unclear about Dr. Sarno's work? I find one must read each of his books at least 3 times for the message to sink in. Do you have his recorded lecture also?

If I recall correctly there's some TMS-oriented book out there focusing on fibro - by Nancy Selfridge? Maybe someone else knows for sure?

Hi Judy, Shortcake couldn't have said it any better! The only thing I would add is that there are a few other books that were very helpful to me..One was Rapid Recovery from Back and Neck pain by Fred Amir, another is by Dr. Sopher called To Be or Not to Be Pain Free, and lastly by Dr. Scott Brady's Pain Free for Life..Recently someone posted on here a video by Dr. Brady which was wonderfully helpful, in my view..He is a Christian and puts a spiritual spin on treatment, but I believe even an atheist could get something from it in terms of help w/ TMS...The video was excellent..Just do a search on this site for Scott Brady and it should come up..I am on the run taking care of my dog who is healing from pancreatitis and so I cannot do the search for you..He's on a strict schedule..Hope this helps! Take care and God bless, Karen |

Judy, Dr. Sarno's treatment plan is in The Divided Mind (not sure what page); this is what he gave me as the study guide when I saw him in January. I think only a word here or there was different. So if you read that section of TDM every day, do some of his book reading every day, and A LOT of journaling, that is his program. Thankfully it worked for me. Best wishes, Lori |

the "treatment" is the "diagnosis".
no excercise, no drugs, no surgery. |

Hi Judy, Skizzik hit the nail on the head when he said the diagnosis is also the treatment. I know it goes against everything we were taught to believe, but I would avoid all medical people if I were you. They will only undermine Sarno's approach by instilling doubts. That goes for psychologists as well. Save yourself the money. You can do just as well by reading some of the excellent books that are recommended on this forum. If you're like most of us, you didn't get TMS overnight. It isn't likely to go away overnight either. |

Hi Skizzik, I like your advice. The whole TMS idea makes so much sense after all these many years of suffering, visiting every kind of doctor looking for help and trying every medicine known to the western world. What books beside Dr. Sarno's do you recommend? I sent away for the MindBody Workbook by Schechter. I'm into this whole plan because nothing else has ever, and I mean ever, worked. Thanks so much. Judy

Hi Judy, welcome to the forum. This is how a lot of us found ourselves here. And believe me, the fact that nothing else HAS worked definitely points to the TMS diagnosis. You can do this, the power is in you just like it was in us. Good luck! |
