Hello everybody,
Let me first introduce myself. I'm 24 years old and 2 years ago I had sharp pain in my lower back while working out in the gym. The doctors told me I would be alright and prescribed physical therapy. However, the pain didn't go away. I had an MRI which showed a bulging disc, but the bulge itself was very small and nothing to be concerned about. But I was very very axious and worried. Two years later, I'm still having pain, it didn't get worse but I have pain everyday. It's a mild, nagging pain. I have pain when I sit (which is a pain in the ass, because I have a desk job).
Being tired of conventional treatment, endless hours of exercises and many hours at the chiropractor, I looked for something else. By the way, the chiro told me my lower back muscles cramp and go stiff and that is the cause of my pain. He gave my exercises to strengthen these muscles ... (I always wondered why, I am well-built and muscular)
I came across Dr. Sarno's work on the internet and ordered Healing Back Pain right away. Great book! I read a little every day and when I was finished, I had 4 to 5 days with NO pain!! I didn't have such days in 2 years, despite all the treatment. But after the five days, the pain returned en stayed. It's downright maddening if you get a taste of pain-free living again and then it's taken away from you. I'm wondering why the pain returned!
I read the book over and over again and journalled every day, but the pain stayed. I also want to say that I had a very happy childhood, but I have other issues. I have a very difficult brother and a typical TMS personality.
Sigh, sometimes I just feel like giving up. |

Ow, and the first couple of days the pain went away, my hip started to hurt! So I knew that had to be a case of TMS, but the pain returned to my lower back anyway ... |

Hi Corax
Welcome to the board. A lot of people say they had a happy childhood but on closer inspection there are always issues. Don't be too quick to dismiss childhood issues even if nothing comes up right away. These things can be quite subtle.
Continue to read the psychology and treatment sections of Dr. Sarno's book and, if you can, get his book "The Divided Mind. " When reading Healing Back Pain, concentrate on those passages which most resonate with you.
It is also crucial to resume all normal physical activity and keep telling yourself over and over again that your back is fine and that the pain is due to TMS and not due to a bulging disk.
************* Sarno-ize it! ************* |

Welcome Corax, I understand your frustration, but don't give up! Shawn gave you great advice...I would just add that although I have some issues from childhood, I believe most of my pain has to do with current life issues and I specifically have big time problems with my sister..Everyone in the family does..It is a huge source of anger/rage for me consciously and unconsciously..
You would be surprised how much of you pain could be related to issues with your brother...We are in internal conflict particularly when we have mixed feelings toward a blood relative..We are programmed to think/feel that we are 'supposed' to love them unconditionally, etc...but that is not always easy..I also have a typical TMS personality and my back pain started on and off when I was around your age..I have herniated discs and bulging discs in my neck and my back..Dr. Sarno and others talk about how those are NOT the cause of the pain..The pain is a trick used by your brain to distract you from terribly uncomfortable unconscious feelings that are trying to surface..Read the Divided Mind..I am not finished with it yet but it is fantastic so far! Take care, Karen |

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for my English too, it's not my mother tongue.
I have read the mindbody prescription as well, but I found it to be very similar with HBP (and I like HBP more). Is the divided mind worth purchasing?
I didn't go to the gym for a year or so, but I'm back working out for quite some time now. I realise many people have worse pains and I really feel for them. I have mild pain and it's still making me sick! If I could do ANYTHING to help those people, I'd do it.
Ow, and I have had other stuff like eczema (even had it when I was a baby) and stomach cramps for my entire life. |

Corax you have a lot going for you.
1.You are young.
2. You found out about Dr. Sarno and TMS.
3. You found this forum.
There are many who go though their whole life and never figure out what the hell is causing the pain and have given up. Keep studing Dr. Sarno's books and reading this forum. |

You gotta taste of the good life there for a few days! Congrats! Here's the rub however, it may take a month or two or 3 to get completely pain free due to overwhelming medical/media conditioning. B4 you know it, you'll have more pain free days than painfull ones, then no painfull ones at all. And then you may feel lonely because you'll be out of the "bad back club" and people will roll their eyes at you when you tell them you were cured by a book. Keep truckin, postin, journaling. |

Corax, I believe TDM is worth purchasing because it's Dr. Sarno's latest findings, along with other doctors' very helpful insights into how they treat TMS patients as well. Best wishes, -Lori PS I can totally relate to a desk job and having butt pain! Happy to say it's no longer an issue since writing extensively about all the $#%^&* that bugged me. |

Corax, here's a positive perspective for you: You made your pain disappear. That means you've got TMS and you're onto the strategy! Its days are numbered and you will eventually beat it. You won't have pain forever, and you know that now, and that itself is cause for happiness.

Corax, the insidious part of TMS is that it does tend to settle in places that were previously injured. But as Sarno mentions in Healing Back Pain, the human body heals very rapidly. Something that happened two years ago is unlikely to be the real culprit. He also indicates that such things as bulging discs don't necessarily cause pain, regardless of what other well-meaning healthcare people have told you.
The first thing I would suggest is to avoid buying into all the fear that goes with this sort of thing. Instead, reread Healing Back Pain. Sometimes it takes more than once to absorb the information. If you see yourself on every page--as I did--then you surely have TMS and need to deal with it accordingly. |
