For when you come back from your vacation Wease - I hope you have a good time. Here is a little of what I have been doing to get back into my exercise routine. A little background: I had bilateral foot problems (plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel) for 17 months. A week after I read Sarno I started walking for exercise again. That was in September. My feet have been doing pretty well.
I started by walking slow for 20 minutes 3 times a week. I gradually increased my speed. Then I gradually increased my time also. I also added in weights. Then when I was more confident I started jogging slowly for 2 minutes at a time. Then I worked up to longer straight jogging stretches little by little.
Once I started getting my jogging going really well (20 minutes straight) I started having knee pain. I tried to run through it for 2 days. I took 2 to 3 days off. I went to my doctor to make sure that it was nothing and to reassure myself. Then I went to a physical therapist for one visit to get strengthening and stretching exercises. After the few days off I started jogging again on the knee for short stretches. It would hurt initially but get better as I ran. After 2 weeks the pain had subsided. Also with the knee pain I started concentrating on leg weights to stregthen my quads etc. Now I do leg weights 3 times a week after I run.
I have slowly worked myself back up and past where I was before. It has been a big mental hurtal for me. I struggle with shin splints and calf pain during and after running that I know is TMS. I have been doing really well the past 2-3 weeks. I am up to 2 miles straight and 25 minutes. I run 5 times a week.
For me it is a gradual thing. After doing so very little with my legs for so long I had to start slow. My muscles were definitely weak. I had to work up my strength and my confidence. I now feel really strong and energetic. I like running and doing weights. I feel like I am showing the TMS that I am the boss!
