Hi everyone,

I have been thinking lately about my childhood. I wet the bed from ages about 3 to 12. I was even potty trained OK for a while until age 3 then suddenly lost it.

No psychological factors were ever considered and I was put on many different antibiotics for long periods of time which led to a host of other health issues... but now I am wondering -- could the whole thing have been TMS?

I wonder if anyone here has heard of bed wetting being TMS in children. I am starting to get this idea that my TMS may have started much younger than I was thinking...

Thanks,
Uma

TMS probably starts in the womb, it's awful dark and scary in there, not to mention claustrophobic.

Yeah i bet you are right -- especially if the mom (like mine) was really anxious, scared, stressed and tense (very tight mom tummy = aaack! i can't move/breathe/relax!).

Hey Uma,

You know, I bet it is! I wet the bed for a couple of years, and my mother handled it VERY badly (screaming, punishing, shaming me in front of my younger siblings as a 'big baby'). But I think it came from the stress in my family.

I think we can get flooded with stress hormones in the womb - maybe because our mothers are anxious about their first pregnancy, or overwhelmed by existing children. And I've heard that children who are already potty trained can regress, as you did, when they think a new or sick sibling (I believe the latter was your case, Uma?) is getting an unfair share of the parental attention. It's like your subconscious is saying 'Hey, I'm the baby here!' It's not 'naughty' or bad, just quite natural - baby animals fight for parental attention because it's a matter of survival.

So yes, basically - I think it's TMS! I even think uti symptoms in adulthood can be a harking back to that - you remember that it was once a problem.

BTW I also think parents look first for a medical or behavioural problem in YOU because the alternative is to admit that it might be coming from them, and they do not want that!

Yet another problem that we can fix for ourselves! Cheers, Uma!

About being flooded with stress hormones in the womb -- I know my parents were going through extreme stress when I was in the womb. I was born via emergency C-section because (my mom was hooked up to monitors) my heart slowed way down and they had to get me out fast and i started life with a bit of oxygen. I now wonder if this was stress-induced even in the womb?!?

Interesting about regression. It sure makes sense. I think because my sister was so sick and handicapped she was getting more than her fair share of the attention, that's for sure.

Thanks for the support everyone.
