I think the allergy question is a bit complex given allergic reactions are functions of the immune system which we know is affected by emotions. As I've grown older I've watched my allergies change and like Jaya, have seen some completely disappear. The emergence of most of my allergies in my early 30's coincided with my life becoming increasingly stressful. Another example I can personally attest to is that of a close friend of mine whose mother died when she was entering college. Shortly after her mother's death, she developed a suite of nasty allergies which made her life miserable. She rarely spoke of her feelings re: her mother's death and it seems to me her immune system just went haywire and the severity of her allergies also created an effective distraction.

pain is inevitable, suffering optional

Read the above article from Quackwatch. Personally, blue cheese on crackers is one of my favorite things. TMS "penicillin knowledge" is a mold.

Cheers

Thanks for the link to Quackwatch, tennis tom--always a good place to have a reality check.

All I know is I have a chronic runny nose, cough, post-nasal drip, excessive throat clearing, and puffy eyelids. My doctor said probable mold allergy and sent me home with Flonase, which does little to relieve my symptoms.

Probable TMS but very frustrating as I see no end in sight...

Your welcome Fadoozle, I had "hayfever" for years that I always thought was an annual flu, then it suddenly disappeared. I now think it was likely TMS as many allergies are. Recently I went to the doc's for a chronic irritated throat. The Physician's Asst. said it was hayfever and I thought ah-ha, TMS. I was also prescribed Flonase and it went away in due course.

I sure can sympathize with your frustration. I've had these same symptoms for the last three years. Flonase didn't help me either. I was told I'm allergic to dust mites. I did everything to control dust mites in my apartment, but it made no difference. Then I thought it might be mold since I lived in an apartment that had a leaky ceiling. So I moved to another place, but my symptoms didn't go away. I tried all the allergy medications there are out there, as well as eliminating in turn all the foods I thought might be causing my allergic reactions, but nothing helped. An ENT put me on three different antibiotics for a total of six weeks, and that didn't help either. A pulmonologist put me on Prednisone, and that finally brought me some relief. But when I stopped taking it, the symptoms came back. I finally became convinced that these symptoms were TMS, but re-reading Sarno's books and applying his principles didn't help me this time. I realized that my real problem was anxiety. So I read Clare Weekes' book, which many people on this board recommended, and I started to make progress. I also applied her method to deal with anger. Not the anger in this "reservoir the rage" we're supposed to have in our unconscious, but the anger we repressed as children and which later comes out as sulking, or avoiding people, or acting aggressively, or being intimidating or manipulating, or by using sarcasm or finding fault with everybody or everything, or thinking negatively. Also, David Clarke's book helped me with writing journals about the events that caused my anger. I write about how I felt then and how I feel now about the people who caused me to feel badly, and then I write them a letter (which I don't plan to send). I also imagine going back in time and talking to myself as a child and explaining to this child why these people made her (me) feel badly.
