i had the same problem...hard for me not to obsess and worry over things :-) typical to TMS types. at least if you obsess try to make it a productive obsession...read Sarno's books, talk to your brain, write about the emotional issues that might be the cause of the brain trying to distract you....and keep yourself busy with things that need your attention completely, one of my breakthrough with the back pain was realizing that when i teach (i teach photography) i 'forget" about the pain...
with all of my obsession, i eventually managed to get over my back pain completely, so don't worry about it too much joan! |

Joan, there is no magic bullet here, it's going to require you to use willpower. I find if I figure out WHY I do something I can address that easier. Why do you obsess over the pain, keep asking until you figure that out. The likely cause is some sort of belief that you have around the pain that doesn't serve you.
Force yourself to start thinking in a different way and see what comes of that.
Also, stop resisting the pain. Make peace with the pain and allow it, THEN start looking at the kind of person you have to be in order to NOT have pain and focus on that as opposed to the pain. You will never rid yourself of TMS pain by trying to push it away......
Takes effort and will power at first.
Good luck

What I realised is that the reason why I focus so much on my pain because I think it is immobilizing my life completely (which to me is cetrainly a good reason to focus on it). Since I got some work it is somewhat better, also because the work doesn't cause me that much pain. Now I am trying to somewhat accept it: so there you are my pain, still trying to scare me? When I feel anxious I think about which events may have caused it in the past. |

I think there are different ways of dealing with TMS that work for different people at different times. Sometimes you need to dig deep to find out what's causing your distress or rage. Other times you need to say 'the heck with it - I'm going to ignore this and carry on as best I can!' I was reading earlier how you can't keep stress and joy in your mind at the same time, so if you can just joy-bomb yourself for a bit, it might give you some relief!
I was also trying to express something in another post about not blaming yourself. It's good to know that we have the tools to heal ourselves in our hands. But I think it's unhelpful to castigate ourselves when we can't heal ourselves sufficiently. I think we all have days when it just gets on top of us. Don't obsess over obsessing over obsessing...! |
