Hi All,

So glad there is a TMS forum.
Sorry, just want to share the problem i am facing (Sorry for my bad English)
I am sharing my experience as I am very lost as nothing seems to work until i read Dr Sarno's book "The divided Mind" (still reading) which gives me hope again.

I started having severe neck & shoulder ache in year 2009 which I seek treatment with a medical specialist who sent me for physio therapy treatment.
It helps to a certain extend and was sent for MRI scan which shows no abnormality..
Endured with the pain till last year July 2011, I had a terrible dizziness for few weeks where I almost broke down. Seeks treatment with neurology who found nothing.
The dizziness went off by itself suddenly and I still suffer from neck and shoulder ache almost daily.

This year feb 2012, I had a bad dizziness again and this time it lasted for a full month. After the dizziness is gone, i have constant pulling of muscle on my left eye (makes me sensitive to light) and headache daily till today.

Had another appointment with my neurology, which prescribe me anti depressant which i have not taken due to side effect.
Did a brain scan as well (still pending result)

I don't know what is wrong with me. I m in the IT sector and using a laptop daily. Every body seems to say my problem must be due to bad posture. (I have tried to adopt different posture with not much positive effect)

This issue is affecting my work and my life...

As i was typing this message , an hour ago i had a bad dizziness again together with neck and shoulder pain. :(

I don't know if I have TMS ...if i have , how should i approach it..Feeling very vex. I am only 32 years old, i dont wanna live like this for the rest of my life..

If it is TMS, your brain knows your an IT Pro...it also knows you have poor posture.
The TMS also knows it can trick you into believing those two things can cause pain.

It's a trick! Walk around your office, everyone stares at a computer screen all day, and they all probably have ****ty posture too.

The Divided Mind is a great book- referred to as "The Good Book"- around my house!! Keep at it, I've read it five times...

While you're working, remind yourself that you're not doing anything crazy. Take a few breaks every once in a while, it s good to clear your mind and slow down a bit.

It sounds like you're on the right track, so good luck!

Yes, I have seen many in my office having much S****y posture but no such issue.. while i have a much better posture with such issue..

Wow. Cptusopp, you sound so much like me. I usually feel a bit of an oddball on this site because so many are suffering from back pain and other ailments I don't have. I also have had the shoulder pain (left side), neck pain, dizziness, headaches, and even the eye twitching and sensitivity to light. I have had other issues too like upper back pain. Very infrequently I have had low back pain. Also, although not an IT guy, I do sit at my computer probably at least 5-6 hours a day. Anyway, bottom line, the good news is that TMS is real and you can beat it! My eye twitching, dizziness, shoulder and neck pain have all gone away. I still have some headaches but they are not chronic anymore. Instead of having one 5-6 days a week, I am down to maybe one per week and then it isn't even that bad. So, I encourage you to keep reading and learning.

Hi,
the difficulty with bad posture is that you, yourself cannot do much about it. your posture dictates how you stand , not the other way round.

you can force yourself into a better way os sitting only for so long. then as soon as soon as your focus drifts onto your work for example, your posture takes over and 10 min you ind yourself in that "bad way of sitting"

What you need is someone whom understands how to actually free the posture. free the mechanical limitations in your body so that you don't need to remind yourself every 5 minute:"oops I'm sitting wrong ". in my experience one cannot change his/her own posture. you need someone.that does that in your area.


And the advice of standing for a while and moving around your office is gold.

Muscles shortens, that what they do, its their function.

if you stay for tooling in a seated position your muscles will be shorten for to long and will want to stay there, NOT GOOD.

move often, every 30 min take a walk, good for body good mind etc.

just got back from a vacation..during vacation..symptom of TMS was mild to nil...now back to work on first day...symptoms are starting to come back...
how do i know if it is TMS or my posture?
I am living in a country with no expertise in TMS :(

I had dizziness and constant headache too. I was diagnosed with anxiety and prescribed an anti-deprassant which I am now taking. This was before I discovered dr. Sarno's work. Now I know anxiety is a TMS equivalent.
If you had reduced / no symptoms during vacation, it might be anxiety.

"Bad posture" is a bunch of BS perpetrated by chiroquackters to get into your wallet. Dr. Sarno's TMS teaches that the back and the body are STRONG--it's the mind that's weak. You probably hate your job, most of us do, that's why it's called a job. Get one of those Keurig coffee makers, it will give you something to look forward to at break-time. Life's too short to sit in an "ergonomically" designed chair all day looking at a computer screen--unless there's some free porn on it.

Regarding "anxiety", there's a book by Bourne recommended by SteveO and Susan828, that I'm adding to my list of books that I'll probably never get to before I die.

I have had anxiety since childhood and have over 60 books, some for the layman and some clinical. I have to agree with Steve....out of all of them, the one that finally did the trick is the one by Bourne. Skip the others...he just hits it right on the nose.

Avik, have you read The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Bourne? Release of anxiety is a personal journey, but I've never found anything as powerful as Bourne's. I've read all the books I've seen discussed here and Weeke's is very good too. But no matter how much you read, it all depends on when you decide to give it up. To let it go. The good authors can explain things but you're the one holding it, and only you can free yourself. It takes great courage but you can let go.

Just finished reading mindbody prescription. Need to re read it again. I still don't quite understand how do I manage/ handle tms. Symptoms are back again after I had a bad news during work last week. And the shoulder pain, dizziness are back:(

I am quite certain I have TMS as I seems to see myself inside the book.

Trying hard and I can sense some improvement in the neck,shoulder pain. Now all of a sudden my left hip and back pain (I think I forgot to mention earlier) is back. It seems like what the book says. Symptom replacement to distract. I hope it is as the X-ray shows nothing serious and doctor simply says my back pain is due to wear and tear ( I m only in my early thirties)

Cptusopp, I'm also just 32...I feel your pain. Well, I feel MY pain...but I know what you mean

I have been in pain for 12 years...I just discovered TMS and I'm sure it applies to me. If the pain moves around or you experience different symptoms, I'd say it's a decent chance you're dealing with TMS. As for dealing handling TMS...from what I've gathered so far, knowledge is literally power...the more you know and the more you accept that the source of your pain is psychological instead of physical, the more successful you will be. As SteveO has said, even just a little doubt keeps fuel on the fire. Focus on your emotions and not the pain...don't let your mind distract you from your emotions or it wins and TMS continues to hold you.

When my hip and back starts to ache, i will tell myself it is nothing physically wrong with me...i still continue to do my day to day task..sometimes it will just go away (100% pain free)...
My dizziness is still not 100% gone , still trying hard.....

That's great that you're seeing that kind of progress! I experience small victories here and there and I'm noticing that my pain levels for the most part are much lower and I'm able to do more things...still working to fully recover!

My dizziness and shoulder ache just disappear 1 week ago....but back pain and hip pain has worsen.....
If i remember correctly, the book " the mindbody prescription" mentioned this is a shift of pain to divert my attention.

How is your progress so far, Dustin?

My progress is good. I wouldn't say I'm pain free yet, but I have moments where I am pain free. The hardest part is not "monitoring" the pain levels. It helps ccepting the pain as just being there and not harmful, and not being afraid to do things because of the pain. As Sarno says in his books (and I'm pretty sure SteveO said in his), the fear of the pain serves the same purpose. I can't even begin to describe how liberated I feel not to be afraid of the pain. So far I have gone bowling (during which I slightly "tweaked" my back on one approach but had no lasting pain from it), and I have danced and played with my son in his play room and rough housed with him in ways I never thought would be possible. I bend over at the waist to pick things up and I pay no regard to how much something weighs before I try to lift it. Yes, I still have pain...but it's getting better, not worse, and I'm doing more than I have in ages.

If you haven't already, I would highly recommend SteveO's book ("The Great Pain Deception") which you can get on Amazon or might be able to get at a local book store. I bought it on Amazon for my Kindle App on my iDevices. Good read and great information.

Another key is don't try so hard to heal. Live. Have fun. Focus on your emotions and not on the pain. It's something that's kind of hard to get in the habit of, but that's what it takes (at least, so far, that's true for me). I still have a hard time not focusing on the pain when I hurt. I have a hard time not monitoring how long I hurt when I hurt. I have a hard time not tensing up and preparing for pain when I feel the tension in my muscles increasing...but I have learned that it doesn't always have to end in pain. I just need to be aware of what I'm thinking about and trying not to think about...if that makes sense.

If your pain moves or some pain gets less and other pain gets more...don't lose heart...your TMS is doing what TMS does. Don't lose sight of your emotions because the pain is there.

I fully agree with you on not monitoring the pain is the hardest part
I am trying hard to focus on emotion. Last week just had a confirmation that is nothing wrong with my brain from the ct scan done few months back.:)
yesterday I was carrying heavy stuff and worrying that it will hurt my back but to my surprise my back didn't ache. It ache while I am doing my usual stuff and not when I m carrying a box of heavy stuff..as I type my shoulder aches again with headache and dizziness accompanying it. I am trying hard to ignore it. I will read the book you recommended.. tks and cheers!

I am having terrible giddiness this week that causes me to remove my spectacle.(my eye power has been checked numerous time to be correct)

It seems like symptom has moved for me..I am trying hard not to focus but sometimes it is hard..e giddiness is present while I m typing .:(

We may be having a language problem here, is this a "good" giddiness or a "bad" giddiness? Could you please explain?
